Build around the first useful outcome
The best first customer video does not list every feature. It helps a viewer complete one meaningful action, see the outcome, and know where to find the current detailed guidance.
Copy this customer education video template
- Viewer: Who is watching, and what have they already done?
- Starting point: Which guide, help article, or product source is current?
- Outcome: What useful result should the viewer reach?
- Three visible moves: What are the few actions or decisions that lead there?
- Checkpoint: What tells the viewer they are on the right path?
- Help boundary: When should the viewer return to the help article, contact support, or use another route?
- Next step: What should the viewer do after the outcome is reached?
Avoid the feature-tour trap
Feature lists make a video broad but not useful. Start with the customer's job, then introduce only the feature, concept, or setting needed for that job. Keep screenshots and exact version details in the maintained help content when they are likely to change.
Pair the video with the source
Link the video from the task section of the help article, and link back to the article for prerequisites, edge cases, and detailed reference. This gives customers a visual route without fragmenting the source of truth.
See the customer first-outcome case for an example of a guide becoming a task-led explanation. Start from a customer education source when the audience and outcome are clear.
