Copy this first-week video template

  • New role: ______________________________
  • What this person needs to understand in week one: ______________________________
  • One workflow they will encounter first: ______________________________
  • What good looks like at the end of that workflow: ______________________________
  • Important check, permission, or boundary: ______________________________
  • Who to contact when the normal path changes: ______________________________
  • Current guide, policy, or workspace to consult: ______________________________

A simple onboarding sequence

  1. Context: What does this role help the team achieve?
  2. First task: What is the first repeatable action they should recognise?
  3. Visible checks: What needs to be true before they continue?
  4. Handoff: Who owns the next decision or exception?
  5. Reference: Where should they go for current details?

Keep the video narrow enough to revisit

Use one video for first-week orientation and another for a high-frequency procedure when the two have different audiences or update cycles. A new teammate should be able to return to the relevant video at the moment of work rather than search through an all-purpose introduction.

See the Support Escalation Learning Design case for a handoff-focused learning structure. When your guide is ready, create an employee onboarding video.
