Write a script that gives each scene a job

Use this template for a process, technical workflow, decision path, or chart-led explanation. It is designed for a short video of roughly 60 seconds, but the structure also works as the opening chapter of a longer explainer.

Copy this seven-beat script

Beat Viewer question Native visual evidence Narration prompt Do not hide
1. Trigger What situation starts this process? A real cue, source detail, or current state “When ___ happens, the first question is ___.” Scope and audience
2. Orientation What are the main parts or roles? Map, labeled diagram, or roles around one object “These parts work together because ___.” The relationship between them
3. First check What must be true before proceeding? Condition, threshold, comparison, or checklist “Before moving on, check ___.” Prerequisites and stop conditions
4. Normal path What changes in the expected sequence? Flow, state change, or worked example “If that condition holds, ___ leads to ___.” The ordered transition
5. Decision Where can the path split? Side-by-side branch or decision tree “If ___, take this route; otherwise ___.” Exception boundary
6. Handoff Who owns the next action and what do they need? Record, evidence package, or named role “Capture ___ so ___ can decide next.” Owner and evidence
7. Close What should the viewer remember or do? Final confirmation and source reference “Use the current ___ to confirm the next step.” The limit of the explanation

Make the script visual before writing more words

For each beat, write the visual evidence first. If the scene cannot show a relationship, a sequence, a comparison, a state, or a real object that matters, it may not need to be a scene. Keep labels short and readable; use narration to connect the evidence.

Example prompts to complete

  • Audience and moment of need: ______________________________
  • The one question this video answers: ______________________________
  • Source that supports the answer: ______________________________
  • Decision boundary that must remain visible: ______________________________
  • Final action or source link: ______________________________

See the IT Operations Triage and Handoff Runbook for an illustrative process explanation. When you have a source and a clear viewer outcome, begin with a script-to-video workflow.
